2019 Here We Come!

2018 was full of many life changes for the two of us, all good, but also very time consuming. As we all know, starting a new habit is hard, especially when that habit requires sitting down on a fairly regular schedule and writing an essay. Needless to say, the attempt at starting the blog last year failed. Utterly. So here's to a new year and a new start!

Many big things happened in 2018, including the purchase of a cute little homestead with 5 acres. The plan is to blog about it to document our progress in turning it into our dream home, but we all know how that worked out last year. Instead, I promise to do my best to post updates when I remember, to not worry so much if there are lots of photos or if those photos are photographer quality, and to remember that baby steps go a lot farther in accomplishing goals than an "all or nothing" approach.

So here's my plan for 2019:

  • Do a low-spend challenge in order to have more money for the homestead, buy less superfluous crap, and continue on my path of minimalism
    • Kick off January with a low-budget month for food to reign in excessive food spending
  • Raise 3-5 chickens from chicks for fresh eggs
  • Plant 3-5 apple trees so I don't have to wait even longer for homegrown apples
  • Spend less time on mindless internet consumption by turning my computer off when I'm not using it and doing my best to leave it downstairs instead of in my office
  • Start my garden with at least 100 square feet of growing space
    • Learn how to, and remember to freeze green beans and peas for winter
    • Freeze zucchini
    • Learn how to make dried cherry tomatoes to preserve cherry tomatoes
  • Start a retirement fund
